Shetland (6U)

Shetland is an instructional league to teach four, five and six-year-old players the fundamentals of baseball. The diamond is 50 feet and the players use a softer than usual baseball. Shetland Minors start the season by hitting from a Batting-Tee and end the season with Coach-pitch. The Shetland Majors use a standard pitching machine. Play consists of three innings in which all team members bat and play the field each inning. No game score or standings are kept. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. Each player receives a baseball jersey, hat.

The Shetland league provides an excellent opportunity to teach basic catching, throwing, batting and fielding, and a love of the game of baseball without making the experience a course of intensified instruction. The best approach is to let the teams play with little thought to victory or defeat, but merely for the joy of participation while, at the same time, learning the fundamentals of teamwork, group discipline and sportsmanship.

Shetland teams have games once a week on Saturdays. Game times vary from 9,11,1, and 3 o'clock. Shetland teams generally practice once a week. Practices and games are held at Britton, El Toro and Central High School.

*There is no player evaluation day for Shetland.
